Why 33 Miles?
One mile for every year of Christ's life on earth. This is not a coincidence — it is a covenant.
One mile for every year of Christ's life on earth. This is not a coincidence — it is intentional!
The Number of Sacrifice
Jesus Christ lived 33 years on this earth — from His birth in Bethlehem to His death and resurrection in Jerusalem. Every year was a year of mission, of teaching, of healing, and showing us how to love through His selfless sacrifice.
When we walk 33 miles, we walk in remembrance. Each mile is a meditation on one year of His life — His childhood in Nazareth, His ministry in Galilee, His final journey to the cross. We encourage you to apply the walk, suffering, pain of these 33 miles in reparation for your sins, for the holy souls in purgatory, for the conversion of sinners and for any other intentions you may have. A reflection document will be given and mile makers will help guide you in your prayerful, penitential, and powerful reflection.
The Tradition of Penitential Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage is one of the oldest expressions of Catholic faith. From the Camino de Santiago to the Via Dolorosa, the faithful have always walked — not for comfort, but for conversion. The road itself becomes a journey of conversion, reparation, and prayer. It is a way to deeply connect to the passion of Jesus as we enter Holy Week.
A penitential pilgrimage is an act of the will. You choose discomfort. You choose sacrifice. You offer your blisters, your aching legs, your exhaustion as a prayer — united to the suffering of Christ.
Palm Sunday: The Destination
We walk to Palm Sunday — the day Christ entered Jerusalem in triumph, knowing the cross awaited Him. He did not turn back. He embraced his cross and He walked forward in love. We follow in His footsteps.
Arriving at the Palm Sunday Mass on foot, having walked 33 miles through the night and morning, is an experience that changes you. You understand, in your body, something about what it means to follow Christ.
"For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps."— 1 Peter 2:21
